Proving that it's FUN to contra dance to all kinds of music with a good beat!
As an outgrowth of my love for modern American folk dancing, especially contra dances, I started my Club Contras project with my brother Clayton in 2011 as a contribution to the relatively new trend of "techno" or crossover contras. These dances typically feature a caller and a DJ rather than (or sometimes in addition to) live musicians, along with special lighting effects to approximate a dance club atmosphere. I have produced Club Contra dance events all over the East Coast, often using the stage name "DJ B-Ham."
Often due to space and budget constraints I am booked as both the DJ and caller for an event, especially for smaller local dance nights or dance weekend "late-night techno after-parties" up to two hours. On the other hand, local Club Contra dances in Virginia have also featured guest artists DJ Solar Sound, DJ Nu B and DJ Improper as well as several guest callers who have had briefing or outside experience in this unique format.
